Social Media Pet Peeves

So at the age of 29, I can honestly say I love social media. I get my sports scores, news updates and celeb goss instantly. I can also communicate with every person I know through some sort of instatwittavine. Especially since I live so far away from all of my family and most of my dear friends, it had made living overseas in 2006 to 2013 a light westerly breeze. The reason I say westerly, is because from growing up on the Jersey Shore, sometimes on that barrier island you get that unwanted flock of green head flies with that warm bay breeze. Every once in a while, there is one fly that gets you good, and man does it sting like a "you know what".

Below are those green heads in my social media experience:

•Selfies: I'm an only child and love to be the center of attention, but peeps, you do realize if you take that many pictures of yourself, that equates to no one in your life telling you you're attractive so you want the rest of the world to maybe think you might be. Guess what... If you don't have someone to take a picture for you, you don't have friends, and youre probably not that cool/nice of a person. Stop posting crap and start reevaluating your life!

•Sonograms: Guuuurlll, you do realize you just posted a picture of the inside of your uterus, right?! Sorry, I deem that inappropriate. I don't care if you are a dear friend or a relative, I will unfriend/unfollow your narcissistic behind. On top of that, your 3D alien baby is freaking me out! Can there be at least one surprise in life, as in, the shape of your baby's nose! I get you're stoked that "you never thought it could happen" and you're "so excited and thrilled". Me too! But guess what, don't rub it in those people's faces who 1) can't have kids or 2)don't want to have nightmares by seeing your super personal seed squished against a probe! Let's all agree to wait five more months for the kid to see the sun first. Then by all means, post away!!

•"Just smashed out a gym session, no excuses." Guess what a-hole? I have been working out at least six times a week for the past 28 years of my life. Big deal! Just because you might have been made fun of for being overweight half of your life or are uncomfortable wearing a bikini, don't post your every workout as a status. No one cares!! Keep a journal if you have to write it down and motivate yourself, and two thumbs up for dropping a pound, but for goodness sake, you should be working out every day. Nobody likes a couch potato!

•Your no carb, all juice diet. If I wanted to watch someone suffer I'd put on a movie of the Holocaust. It's not sustainable and it's stupid. Instead of 7 cookies have 1! Instead if a cookie eat an apple?  Problem solved!! Don't be ridiculous.

Bottom line, stop being jackasses people. A little common sense and a lot of common courtesy would be greatly appreciated by the instatwittavine world, but most importantly by me! Please don't ruin my social media browsing. I am the queen of useless information and I need to get my fix. Remember this next time you want to post the above: "Ain't nobody got time, fo' dat!"

Great Gatsby

I just got home from watching The Great Gatsby starring Leo. The movie was a fantastic 3-D adaptation to F. Scott Fitzgerald's book. I actually didn't like the book the first time I read it at age 12, but the second time I read it in high school, followed by watching Robert Redford play Gatsby, I was blown away.

For my 15th birthday, my mom took me to The Rosebud Mansion where the original movie was filmed. Ironically enough, I was living in Sydney where the second movie was filmed.

I went with three Aussies, a fellow American and a Canadian, and was taken back by how I was the only one who had ever read the book. There are so many references to the book which have been made through my life and I cannot believe  studying the writing style alone hasn't been made mandatory, elsewhere.

I guess I owe many thanks to Mrs. Perry for making me reread The Great Gatsby and teaching me how to appreciate and all kinds of literature.

My only qualm from the movie was Jay-Z and Beyonce songs stiing through the movie. I know Mr Carter was an Executive Producer, but Baz Luhrman you lost me on that one. The Roaring 20's were all about the Charleston and brass bands. I'm not sure where Empire State of Mind became appropriate?! Let's keep it real-er next time, guys.

G'day,

It's a Friday afternoon and a lot has happened. The Lady SuperCats are 14-4 and on top of the ladder! Work is going great! I can't believe I have missed my second 4th of July in a row. I forgot how much I enjoyed a good 'ole American hotdog and cheeseburger. I also miss all of the great FRESH seafood the Jersey Shore, and my dad's friends seem to get their hands on. It's funny, because I live on an island, but I'm not always quite sure what I'm eating as far as seafood is concerned. There's barramundi, flake, and a ton of other fish. Plus, people eat the skins of their fish here...YUCK! What's wrong with you all?!

I have picked up a few sayings, and apparently, I'm saying them very "Aussie". When I don't mean to, I can speak with the Aussie accent, but when I'm trying to imitate someone, I wind up sounding British.

Speaking of British, how pumped is everyone for the Olympics?! I'm stoked! Yes, I've played hoops my whole life, but that little gymnast in me can't wait to watch the US women do their floor, bar, vault and beam routines! Sign me up for a round off back hand spring, double back punch front ariel layout ANYDAY!! I am slightly concerned, however, because, being in Australia, means I will be forced to watch all of the Australian golds. Granted, I have met and or played with or against a few of the Aussie, New Zealand, Great Britain and American stars, and have met a  handful of the Aussie men's team (did I mention I spoke to Patty Mills the other day and saw Luc Longley coach twice?! No big deal?!), but I will miss seeing the stars and stripes and Star Spangled Banner being played, in the spirit of Independence Day and what not. I will try and get my eyes on a USA women's soccer game as well.  GO CHRISTIE! (I was watching Ellen the other day and her teammate was on and showed a pic of her with Christie, I jumped out of my chair and yelled and told my roomies she went to my high school! So cool!)

Well, for all of my friends and family at home complaining about the heat, suck it up! It's winter here. My Maine blood is gone. I get so cold so quickly. My wallet isn't loving the heat bills either, but I'll survive!

Chat soon, I'm out!

Cheers

Tuesday, May 8, 2012

Well a lot has certainly happened since my last post. I have been so busy since my last post, I'm not really quite sure where time has gone!

Ironically since then, I have actually moved to Geelong, the team who won the AFL Championship. Also since then, I spent Christmas and New Years in Sydney and on the beach, surprised my family in NJ for a week (after not seeing them for an entire year) and moved to the sunny south coast of Victoria, Geelong.

I live on a hipster street in a little city of 100,000 people. I'm 45 minutes west of Melbourne and in between is nothing but sheep and fields. The hot spot in town in the National Wool Museum by day and a bar called Lamby's by night (seriously, you can't make that stuff up.) Also, the guy, Cameron Ling, who was the MVP of that AFL team which won the Championship, yea well he owns that bar.

I've seen Kelly Slater surf Bell's Beach (and lose, but get a 10 on a wave) so I can cross that off the bucket list.

Hoops has been fun, and the people here in this town are fantastic. I have to say, however, that I thought I hit the jackpot with my teammates in Manly, but my teammates in Geelong are just as wonderful. I am very lucky!

We are currently hooked on The Voice and Revenge. Revenge is AMAZE and the Voice is great, I just really wish they would kick off the Pom and stop the chick from crying. The American and the Aussie who lives in America, are the best judges....the other two are driving me NUTS!

And how about NBA playoffs?! All of the T's: Tantrums, Techs, and Tears! Gosh I wish the NBA went from Nov-April and college hoops went from August-June. Although I would have hated it in college, thats for sure.

I'm going to try and keep this better up to date.  I will revert back to my old style of themes and quirky daily activities.

Cheers!

Flannel-in or TOO in?

Aussie rules football, or better known as AFL. It is the greatest sport to watch. It is so entertaining and the skill involved in kicking an odd shaped ball with such precision, 50 yards down the field into a teammate's hands, is in itself, amazing! Well the Grand Finals (aka league championship) was on Saturday. We watched it World Cup stylee at a a biergarten. There were two teams playing, one Geelong Cats, and the other, Collingwood Magpies. Now the Collingwood fans are a bunch of feral fans. In my case, they remind me of the Red Sox, but its more or less like routing for Nascar. Every Collingwood fan has Nascar fan tendencies.

Moving right along.

We were in the corner next to this table of guys. They were all about 25-28 and all barracking for Geelong. Except, every single one of them had a flannel shirt on. Now I've seen that these shirts are back in style, but, really? Girls sometimes ask what friends are wearing so they don't wear the same thing, but these boys ALL had on the same styled shirt, just in different colors. Did you all send out a Facebook note to each other? "Mate, lets wear our flannel shirts." "Great idea, totally keen." Or is it they all think they look so stellar in the SAME shirt?

I was in Sydney's east, which is like NYC's village. If I wanted to go to a rodeo, I would have gone, but boys, flannel might be in, but you just made it TOO in. Bed Bath and Beyond has less of a selection in the flannel section compared to your group of friends!

"I was RUNNINGGGG!"

My boss Dave's nephew was sick this weekend (just a cold) and wasn't well enough to run in Sydney's infamous City 2 Surf race. Dave asked if I wanted his bib to run in the 14 km (8.7 mile/ one-third marathon) race. It was on a Sunday morning and I only had birthday drinks planned for Saturday night, so why not?!
I woke up Saturday morning and took the bus (free public transport all day with your bib, # 6975) into the city. I hopped in line and I was just in time for the start.

Well this race had a gradient that was killer! (see below)
Last year I did the Belmar 5 mile after a Bon Jovi concert so I was pretty cocky. This race was legit. 85,000 took part in this race. It is the largest timed race EVER to take place in the WORLD. I was a part of making history.  as you can see through 6-8k there is a hill called "heart break hill." It wasn't as much of a physical heart  break as it was an emotional butt kick in more than a few ways. First off, your body will do anything your mind wants it to do. Second, how can you feel pain when there is a man with a hand-bike propelled wheelchair climbing a 45 degree slope next to you at a speed that is almost going backwards? There was a woman who didn't have any legs wheeling herself up the hill as well. It took me at least 20 minutes to climb this hill, but this woman was struggling, and to see runners who could barely breathe or walk, taking turns pushing this woman was heartwarming. Then, in the last 4k's a blind man came up beside me and was holding onto an orange band with another man. The other man was his guide, racing along with him. At this point I almost burst into tears (if I did I probably would have had an asthma attack, so I pulled myself together just in time.)  My hips were aching and my quads were burning, but the fact that these people were racing on this incredibly difficult course, was enough motivation to not quit.

After crossing the finish line when the clock said 1 h 23 min, I was quite satisfied. (That wasn't my official time though, because I didn't cross the start for at least 4 minutes after the clock started.) If you were to times this pace by three, I would have run a 4 hour marathon! That is pretty darn good, considering NYC's course doesn't have nearly as tough of hills. I also wouldn't have had several beers before the marathon either!

After the race I guzzled at least a gallon of Gatorade and water, then got a bacon and egg sandwich and met up with my roomie. I met up with her about an hour after and we grabbed a chicken sandwich and a much deserved brewski. City2Surf is kind of like a Seafood Festival afterwards. Its a giant party. Unfortunately, I was soo tired I couldn't hang past 1 pm.  I took the bus from Bondi Beach (which I got a solid 30 minute nap) to the train in Bondi Junction to the bus in the city, to my doorstep. I took a shower and by 4 pm I was lights out until 8 this morning. Although I was so exhausted, that was one of the most fun races I've ever run. I'm giving my body today to recover, but I have 18 miles more to run this week for my marathon training! I'm soo excited for NY, only 85 days left! Now I just have to raise $2950 more for PKD and I'll be set!

Americana goes Aussie- Part I

Out the window goes gargantuan brewed coffees and Staten Island accents. I now drink skinny capps with poached eggs and say "Oy!". I call my living room a lounge room and coaches lounges. I take the bus to the city (sometimes to sneak that Venti brewed coffee from the American Starbucks-I have found four locations in Sydney!) and ride a push bike instead of a bicycle. I look right left right when crossing streets.

Here are some of the new terms I use in daily conversation:

Arvo- Afternoon- "Let's grab lunch this arvo."
OTT- Over the top "Her outfit was OTT."
mobile- Cell phone "Call my mobile."
devo- devastated "I'm so devo my meal was crap."
toats- Totally- See below
froth- when you like a guy "I'm toats frothing on ....."
perv- see froth
babe- hun - "Hey Babe." -Sounds common but EVERY girl says it.
suss- sort out- "I'm going to suss out my finances before I book my plane ticket."
bloody hell- For crying out loud/Damn it -  After burning my oatmeal- "Bloody hell!
far out - In any instance you want to use the F word or say No way - When I read the bus timetable wrong this week and realized I'd have to wait 40 min for the next bus: "Bloody Hell! Far out!"
How ya goin'?- How are you. "How ya going today?
mate- bud, guy, homie, sweetie. "Hey Mate!" "Mate, what were you thinking?"

That's all I can think of for now, but I will let you know more in Part II!

BALDING

I was sitting on the bus into the city early in the morning this week. As I looked around, I saw at least four men in their mid 20s with some serious balding. One guy was bold enough to close shave and polish his dome. Well done champ! No use in saving something that's not there, or worse...saving something thats better off gone.
If at any stage in a man's life, he has to grow his ranga (as in oRANGAtan) beard into a comb over turban, you deserve to be made fun of. If you thought you would never get an 'ole bird to marry you, guess again. I'm pretty sure a pterodactyl wouldn't even touch down on your landing pad homefry!

Sorry mate, God hates you. He put hair on your ENTIRE body except your head. Cruel joke. Good news, you have eyebrows...along with enough hair to weave enough blankets to keep an entire family warm this winter. At least you're comfortable in your own skin, or shall I say fur, to deal with the bareness of your belfry.

Good news and bad news Prince Billy. Good news is, you got your mum's ears. Bad news, you got your dad's hairline. Good thing you still had the hair for the wedding. You really should have worn your wedding hat. Might have had better pics without that glare coming off your scalp. Bummer though that you won't have hair to hold your crown when Grandma E and Papa Prince croak. Let it go. SHAVE IT!

Then there is "THE DONALD"
Some guys just don't know when to give it up. I guarantee there is a baby squirrel nested in there. He might even hide a beer or a flask in there daily just so he doesn't have to deal with the pain of having his hair. Can one get "FIRED" for hair like that? DT...its over. You have the hot 2nd wife. You're a grandpa. Get old and get bald already! If not...I'm pretty sure you can afford some decent extensions? Or maybe you could hire a better stylist who could color your hair properly. Andre Agassi got rid of his extensions and was a better man and player for it. We would all love you much more. Now that you're not running for President 2012, you can by all means be a baldy!

Note to all balders:
   1st step: Acceptance.
   2nd step: A sharp razor.
  Get it done!

Rain Keeps Falling Out My Window....

It is BUCKETING here in New South Wales. Thank you mini cyclones. Highways are closed down, my Rainbows (that would be my flipflop, there would have to be sun for real ones in Sydney) have kept my feet stained for about 2 weeks. This is madness! Remember that June we had had 2 summers ago? Yea...this is worse. It hasn't rained like this for four days straight in 131 years. There hasn't been a July with this much rain in Sydney in over 60 years. NUTS! The saying in the states is March is in like a lion and out like a lamb and April showers bring May Flowers? It's a not like that here, mainly because of the whole 'opposite sides of the equator thing". Well July showers bring Floods! Where is Noah. I need an Ark. My hair hasn't been straight in a month. You can probably tell by this email that I'm slightly bitter I haven't seen sun. I need my Vitamin D and drinking milk just isn't cutting it! I think this is why I left Denmark. I NEEED sunlight. Maybe I'm just long overdue for summer? It's been 11 months since I've had one. Six weeks or less and I'll be beaching it like it's nobody's business! For my sanity, please pray for sun! It's looking like I might need a rowboat to get get my new flat. Well maybe a rowboat with a three horsepower? It's kind of far!!

Update from Oz

So sorry about the blogging efforts. Things have been a little crazy. I went to Melbourne the first week of July. It was so great to see my old family and friends. I did get a bit of a winter cold because it was freezing and rainy down there. All is good now. We are in 4th place in the league. Check out the website: League Website for upcoming details. We have a few more games left then head into playoffs. We play the #2 team in 2 weeks so that will be good.

On a cool note, I'm moving into an apartment with a girl from my team's (Kristen) sister. Kristen and her boyfriend Dan live right across the hall. Its in a town called Mosman. It will be so nice to live closer to the city. Since the season is coming to an end it will be nice to  be closer to the main areas of Sydney during the summer months. I'll send pics of my new pad out as soon as I get there. It will be nice to  be on my own again. It was nice to have the family feeling for the past few years, but lets face it...its about time!

So who is coming to visit me?! I'm waiting for some fellow Americans to get out here!

Hope all is well stateside. I miss everyone.

Cheers!

Winter Weather

I was looking at a job in Portland, Maine a few months ago around the same time the offer to come to Australia was put in my head. I loved Maine, but loved Australia more. The people are equally as wonderful and I had equal amounts of friends in each place. However, it was a hard decision. After today I now know I made the right decision.

I was to"ld that today was a typical winter day in Sydney". I just about fell over. Sunny and 68 degrees. The ocean was 72. If Sydney is perfection in the winter, what was UMaine in the winter?!

I have decided that my goal in the future if I ever do move back to the states...is to be a snow bird. However, after this winter...even Florida was cold. Therefore, I will be moving to Australia for some 100 degree summers and back to NJ for 100 degree summers. There really isn't any reason to be so cold for SOOO long. It just nonsense.

Last month there was frost on the car window.  I asked where the ice scraper was and my friends just looked at me like I was stupid. They don't even sell ice scrapers here, they use their credit cards if they have to!

I was told to bring a "jumper" aka sweatshirt to my game to warm up in because the gym was cold. It was about 75 and I was sweating.

Any place where you can wear flip flops all winter is my kind of place. So when is someone coming for a visit?! It might be winter, but its warmer than summer in Jersey right now :) Oh..and I don't have to worry about traffic or parking for the beach...I just walk across the street!

Birthdays

Hello!
So sorry it's been so long since I have last written about my "fun down und' ". Things have been great since the last post. I had a big birthday. I'm now 27...YIKES! I'm in my LATE 20's now. I remember when my two cousins who are 9 years older than me turned 27. The first thing I said to them was, "WOW, you're almost 30!". Well, one of the girls I coach who just turned 21 this past weekend wanted me to go to this bar called Shore Club in town for her party. I told her I would only go out if we went to Charlie Bar, because I feel like a dinosaur at Shore Club. (All the girls are 18 or under and are sloppy messes.) She then asked me, well, how old are you? I asked her how old she thought I looked. She said and I quote, "Twenty".  Then I told her I was 27. No joke karma is a (well you know). She immediately said with the most confused/disgusted face,  "WOW, you're almost 30!"

God Bless her. I'm her coach. I tell her what to do and to run for not shooting with her left hand, and she thinks I look 20. This is great!

I'd like to thank Bob and Wanda first and foremost. Even though Dad is bald, he doesn't have any gray hair and he looks about 20 years younger than he is. As for Mumma, I think that if she actually did physical activity, she would have a better bod than Jillian Michaels, but she doesn't do anything, and eats the saltiest, buttery, savory food in the world and still fits into her prom dress from almost 40 years ago. This is true to the fact, that medically, my genes kind of bite, but physically, my genes ROCK!

Next I'd like to thank Mary Kay. Been using your stuff for 7 years now... and I think it's doing its job.

Finally, I'd like to thank my best friends. You all keep me young.  When they see me occasionally steering down Lame-o Lane, they run after me and bring me back to LL Cool Drive.

Needless to say, I'm super pumped I look 20! Lets hope my 27 year old body feels the same way this weekend against the #1 team in the conference. More to come!

Surfers and Sports

I am privileged enough to live next to some of the most amazing surf in the world. No wonder every time I go to the beach I see 50-100 people sitting on the their boards, eagerly awaiting for their next ride. I find it quite comical that most of these people are fearless and willing to go head first into a 9 foot monster, yet they wear winter wet suits and the water is 75. SOFT!

Well last night I refereed a few games. It was men's league. I had a team of rugby players vs a team of surfers. The rugby players wore short shorts, had no necks and were about 6' and above. The surfers, on average, had blonde hair, dark tans (which I can't figure out because they wear winter wet suits) and 80% had some sort of ponytail.

Now the rugby players were tough and didn't complain once about a call (I didn't blow my whistle much, so there REALLY wasn't much to complain about. No blood no foul right?!)

Well these surfer dudes, they were such wingers! Cry, complain, and gripe. For dudes who look God in the face and say, "Bring in on, Bro." They hate when a guy can jump higher than them.  I have the utmost respect for surfers. It is really a tough sport. The core strength is something I wish one day to have, but know I will never have anything on Big Wave destroyer Laird Hamilton.

It is an interesting concept, however. I have friends and family members who never played a contact sport in their lives, but are killer surfers. They run like a Yogi Bear, chest forward, butt backwards, and have the hand eye coordination of a drunk orangutan. What's with that? Make a surfer chase a ball and the "Hot Factor" goes right out the window.

Yet the rugby players, played well together. They were tough. Never complained about a call (because I'm an awesome referee... :D) and were scrappy. They could catch, pass, shoot and run.  I'm sure each of them could eventually pick up a board and teach themselves to surf. They could probably pick up a mitt and learn baseball, too. But why is it that surfers who start out as surfers, can't pick up any other sports? The hard work, and determination are there, no doubt. What is it. What keeps surfers from being well rounded athletes?

I'm not really sure, but I'm going for a swim in the ocean, no wetsuit needed!

No Worries, Mate

I have had a few different views from some of my many places of employment. I've spent many years in a marina, and as much as I love to scrape a few barnacles, vacuuming bilges and musty cabins didn't always make for the best work environment. Then there was waitressing on the inlet. Great view, but I was always serving the people who were about to get on the boat I probably cleaned the day before and enjoy themselves in the hot sun, while I wore black pants on 98 degree days and ran in and out of a greasy kitchen all day. I also got to spend a summer in AC which wasn't too bad, especially during the crazy heat waves.

There were also three summers I worked at the Spring Lake B&T as a lifeguard and server. Not a bad view, and I got to work out for a living.  That was a cool job. This is pretty much the same thing. This morning I woke up, ate some breakfast, threw on some workout clothes and headed to the 70 degree beach with my lap top. The commute wasn't tough. I walked out my front door, across the street, around the golf course and up over the dune to the sand. It was a little tough going at one point because with my feet so far in the sand, I was laughing at a few seagulls fighting over a chicken bone when a wave came and soaked my spandex. On my 10 minute walk, I saw several guys being towed in half a mile or so off the beach into 12' waves....NBD (No Big Deal).

I then came upon the lookout and walked up the sidewalk to grab a skinny capp and found myself a nice picnic table, facing the golf course, watching surfers jump off the rocks into the surf and nailing these incredible double overheads close to the beach. I sent off a few emails, organized some paperwork, and here I am writing this and cannot believe it is noon already. (Also, I'm pretty sure Kelly Slater just walked by, but I didn't want to bother him! ) Speaking of Kelly Slater, his best friend and one of my favorite musicians, Jack Johnson, once said,
''The ocean has taught me to have respect for everything non-human, not man-made, and to be able to feel the power of it. It makes you feel how insignificant you really are. It's not a negative thing. It's a very humbling thing, and it's a good thing to feel like that.''
I think I know what Jack was talking about. This is it.

No worries, mate.

U S A

I woke up this morning to an email, from a good friend of mine.
"I am not sure if you heard or not, but Osama Bin Laden was killed by the Navy Seals yesterday.  Today is a great day to be an American.  I was driving on 495 with my windows down blasting
"And I am proud to be an American, Where at least I know I'm free. And I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me... so I proudly stand up next to you and defend her still today... cause there aint no doubt I love this land... GOD BLESS THE USA!"
People were driving past me dying laughing but you know they wanted to join in too!  I was practically in tears thinking about how much I love being an American"
After watching the news last night, sitting in the living room with my my host family I was so ecstatic we finally "got 'im". They showed Americans cheering in the streets of DC in front of The White House and in the streets of NYC. When they panned to NYC, I starting to tear up. I was proud to be an American, for sure.

Today, I walked down the street to a local coffee shop to read the Sydney Telegraph newspaper. As I was in line to order my coffee, a man talking to his mate and a barista said, "Can you believe those Americans? Celebrating like idiots in the streets?"

I then ordered my coffee, very loudly, in my best New Jersey accent, looked at the guy dead in the eyes and said, "Yes, sir, I can. I am proud to be an American more so today than ever before."

There was no way that man was going to take this great day away from us, the USA.

To my family, friends and all those overseas, who have or are fighting the past ten years, thank you.  The world is a safer place.

I'm a Catholic girl and I realize I shouldn't be celebrating the death of anyone and probably should be taking more of an Martin Luther King, Jr approach, especially being over seas, but lets face it, I'm my father's daughter...

DING DONG!!!

Wedding Hats

If you didn't watch the Royal Wedding, please stop reading this now.

Those of you still reading, good form and kudos!

I don't care too much for weddings, I'm more or less of a wedding Scrooge. I'm eloping (you're welcome Bob & Wanda.) But the Royal Wedding was different. It had some Disney magic involved. My favorite part about the wedding, was when I first turned the coverage on, and the apple of every girl growing up in the 90's eye, (before the bald spot of course) Prince William and Harry  (he wasn't good looking until two years ago, though) were in their Rolls Royce's, driving (well being chauffeured) to the Abbey. Wills was so handsome and he had his Red uniform on. To the fellows reading this, yes, he IS our prince charming and this IS the wedding we all dream about having as little girls! I started tearing up a tad bit.

Now I know this is titled Wedding Hats, so that's where we're going.

Then they panned to some celebs in the Abbey. I had NOO idea the extent of these hats worn at Royal events. There was Elton John, and whats his name? -Not wearing hats. Becks and Posh-awesome hat, and  Mama Midds- GO CAROLE!  Any other day I would have thought Princess Bea and Princess Eug's flying flamingo and preposterous peacock ensembles were Royal gaffes, and way OTT (over the top). But they were AMAZING! There was one woman, I believe the Prime Minister of Great Britain's wife, who didn't have a hat on and she was the one who really looked like an idiot! Now I'm not too much into fashion, mainly because they don't make clothes my size, but I have a small dome. I'm all about the hat crazy. I HEART WEDDING HATS!

We all know, that the rate I'm going, I won't be getting married any time soon. I am, however, proposing a few wedding hat wearing ideas I can partake in.
1) I propose (with a sapphire diamond?!!) every girl should wear wedding hats to weddings. I love this tradition and I am all about carrying on my grandaunt Alice's old style of wearing crazy hats to weddings.
2) You've heard of ugly Christmas sweater parties. I want hat parties. If I ever buy a house (or rent one for that matter!) I will have a hat party house warming. When I get married, I will have a hat themed bachelorette. Imagine  friends, half of mine being over 6 foot, in heels and with these hats! Scene? YES PLEASE! My birthday is in a few weeks, totally thinking about a hat party.
3)  Lets make it awkward events as well! Imagine showing up to a first date or meeting your future in-laws in an OTT hat. Wedding hat: $50. Look on blind date's face when you show up for with a saucer on your noggen: Priceless.
4) While we're at it, lets spice up baby and bridal showers! Seriously, we all know what she's getting because WE SAW THE REGISTRY! Let's get sauced and talk hats sisters!
5) Funerals could be ok, too. You could wear a hat that reminded you of the person who died. If something were to happen to me, I'd want you all to wear hats (jus' saying'). I'm Irish, so funerals are a celebration and we all tell really funny stories about the person who passed. But hats would be the icing on the cake (are there cakes at funerals? I want an ice cream one at mine!) No tributes needed, just a hat on every woman, lock me up and throw dirt on me! Oh yea, lets not forget to then go have a cold one, with a hat on, in my honor, and on my dollar!

Aussies and Easter

Well the Easter holiday weekend is a big deal here in Australia. My weekend was "heaps" of fun.

Good Friday was nice. We had a fish dinner, fried and baked, and then I went to "The Footy" aka Rugby. Apparently there are three types of footy in Australia. Rugby League, Rugby Union (same game different rules) and Aussie Rules AFL. AFL is the best in my mind, but is mainly played in the Melbourne area. It's intense and there are lots of points scored, some matches ending with a 151 point spread (I went to that game last time I was in Australia. The Richmond Tigers were beat by 151 points, they are my team, too. It's like being a fan of the Mets, they are good, but always seem to disappoint.  Needless to say, Rugby is dumb. The team I went to watch, (Manly Sea Eagles), won 22-16. It was like a high school football game feeling except everyone was drunk. (Oh wait, unfortunately, that actually sounds just like a high school football game!)

Saturday was nice, we went to the Royal Easter Show at the Sydney Olympic Grounds. What a facility. I could just picture the US teams running around with their gold medals on in 2000. Quite spectacular. It was rainy when we went but they day before, 120,000 people attended the show at $35 a pop. It's the equivalent of Maine State fair, add $30,000 to everyone's individual income, and throw in Seaside's boardwalk events and Show Bags. Show Bags, by the way, are GENIUS. They are marketed for weeks before the show and are these plastic bags that either have your favorite candy, a toys with candy, whoopie cushions, or any other combination imaginable in them!  It's like cheap candy and crap at the boardwalk in bags for a low price! Every kid wants 1-10 of them but they trick is, they are at the end of the show. So kids have to be good the ENTIRE day or else they don't get a show bag. I saw one kid cry at 6:30pm. Like I said, GENIUS.

Saturday night I went into Manly with Roz's kids and friends. We had a good time and there was this great band who played awesome hits. I almost felt home. I realized I wasn't when I was talking to some Brit and he asked me where in North America I'm from. I told him New Jersey and he got all of his friends around and made me tell them all about the Jersey Shore. Who would have thought being in the same bar as JWoWwW would make me cool on the other side of the world?!

Sunday morning I got up early and went to church with Roz. Apparently we went to a "modern mass". I wore black pants (since its technically the beginning of winter here, I would have worn white home) and a nice top. People showed up in jean, and even worse, jean shorts, plain t-shirts, mini skirts and very casual attire. I didn't see a single Easter outfit. Then there was this little terror of a boy. He was about 3 and half, had a nook and was laying on the ground, rolling around and throwing a tantrum. We never said the Nicene Creed, there was a baptism in the middle of mass and a bit of chaos during Eucharist. It made me miss St. Peter's mass, to tell you the truth.  At least after mass, we had a massive brunch, a couple nana naps, and movie day. It was a relaxing day for sure.

Monday, was ANZAC day. This stands for Australia New Zealand Army Corps. During WWI, the ANZAC's played a game called Two-Up. You put three pennies on a ruler and flick them in the air, there are bets going on and if you want to bet heads, you hold your money between your fingers and put your thumb on your head like a chicken, and if someone wants to bet you tails, you give them your money. When the announcer in the ring yells out the call, the money is given to the proper person. It is only legal to play on ANZAC day and it is soo fun. I played once, bet $20, and won, therefore winning $20. I then went to the slots (this all takes place at the local Diggers, Diggers is also a synonym for Veteran, which is each town's high class version of a VFW/Elks lodge.) I then took a few dollar coins and put it in a slot. I ended up winning $35. It was my lucky day! $55 bucks! This country might turn me into a gambler, but...probably not!

Since ANZAC Day fell on a Monday, Tuesday was a public holiday so everyone had off. We had an Easter Roast Dinner of lamb and roast pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and broccoli. It was delicious and a nice ending to a big weekend. Alana (Roz's daughter) then took me to a Chris Brown concert. It was fantastic. He is such a good entertainer, but I did find it funny how many times he told the audience he loved them. Really CB? You say that too much that we soo don't believe you.

Overall, it was a wonderful weekend. I hope everyone in Jersey enjoyed it as well.

Cheers!

ROBBED!

But I was robbed last night.

I know what you're thinking, and it's not that kind of robbed.

The past two days I have been busy at home working and only left the house to go for a jog or to get my laundry off the line. So last night after reading the local rag, I saw the movie Something Borrowed was playing. Now since I read the whole series by Emily Giffin, and really enjoyed the books, I thought it would be a good excuse to get out of the house to see it.

I took the bus for $3.30 down to Warringah Mall. I couldn't find the theatre, but ended up asking a lady on a bench where it was (after walking around the building to the dodgy loading dock!). She directed me inside the mall and up the escalator 3 floors.

Now I totally forgot you can 1) Buy booze at the cinema here. 2) Can bring your own booze or beverage to the cinema (and not have to smuggle it). 3) Over pay your entrance.

When I went to buy my ticket, the prepubescent pipsqueak at the counter said, "Twenty-five dollars ma'am."

(SIDENOTE: REALLY?! MA'AM!!)

I just about up-chucked! 25 bones to see a movie I know how it is going to begin, the plot, AND the end. I told him I wanted a regular ticket and he said because its a premier all seats were $25. He said regularly they are $17. He also said, "It comes with a bag full of things, like magazines..."

I quickly interrupted and went Jersey Girl on him, "MAGAZINES! I better get a beer and a hot dog for that price! I want to speak to your manager."

The poor kid got on the phone and the manager got on the phone. The boy said told him it wasn't advertised in the paper. The boy didn't let me speak to the manager. The boy got off the phone and told me that he was sorry but the movie would have to be $25. I could always see Rio for $17. (I almost spoke in my best Staten Island accent and asked, "Hun, I'm not 12." But refrained.

Now I'm fuming. I was so worked up I was now hungry and thirsty. So I sucked it up and bought the ticket. I went down to where the theatre was and went to get a drink out of the vending machine. It $3.50 for a SODA! My bus fare was cheaper! I was given my little bag before I got to my seat and it had a Marie Claire from February, a stick of lipstick (not my color) and a coupon for Myers (Macy's over here) for $15 off and expires Wednesday. Funny thing is today is Holy Thursday, Friday is Good Friday, Sunday is Easter, Monday is ANZAC Day (Memorial Day), and Tuesday is public holiday. So technically I only have Saturday and Wednesday to shop at this stupid store for a louse $15 off.

Needless to say, the movie was good, the bag was bad. I got my $3.30 out of my pocket to get back on the bus.

Now you know, a night out at the movies cost $31.30 in Sydney. I will never complain again about a $9.00 ticket, especially not when I use my Maine student ID to get $1 off! I guess it kind of worked out though, I got a $99 ticket today to Chris Brown for only $33 at the Sydney Olympic Events Center. So I'm going to say, I guess I'm still on top!

Sydney

I went into Sydney yesterday. It was incredible! I took a bus from down the street from my house and got a day pass to take public transportation which includes the train, the bus, and the ferry. I took the bus into the center of the city (the bus went over the Sydney Bridge with a great view of the Opera House.) I met a friend from college (whom I found out would be in Sydney on holiday from teaching in South Korea) we went and saw some red kangaroos, koalas, snakes, crocs and spiders at a museum in Darling Harbour. We also got some lunch on the harbor and walked around the city a bit. I took the ferry back and the view of the harbour was unreal.

I also picked up some fun pamphlets of things to do in Manly, which is the town in between where I live and Sydney. I'm looking forward to doing a bike tour or two around the towns!

We have a game tomorrow night at 5. I'll keep this updated on stats.

Cheers!

Getting Settled

So I made it...Yayyy!

I'm all caught up on everything. I arrived Saturday at 6:30 am, got a little tour of the city, took a nap, and went to the Youth League game then found out I was cleared to play in the ABA game. The girls won by 30, and I was tired so it worked out I didn't play. After the game the team went out for Thai food and then into Manly (a northern Sydney beach local spot).

We had a good time getting to know each other. It was an early night for all and came home at 12. Funny story though:

So I left my house key in my duffle bag which was in my coach's car. I met the daughter of the lady (Roz) whom I'm staying with out and she had told me where the spare key was. When I got home, the key wasn't there. Roz had taken the key to get copies made for me earlier in the day, and had forgotten to put the key back. She had also been locked out that night, but she wound up having a spare in her purse.

Needless to say, since Roz got a new couch in the living room this week, the old couch was under a the patio roof awaiting pickup from St. Vincent de Paul. Roz is a really heavy sleeper, so knocking was futile. I wound up camping out on the couch under the stars. It was a gorgeous night and the definitely saw some shooting stars. Then I woke up and saw the sunrise. It was GORGEOUS.

Sunday I went to the beach. (Go on, be jealous!)  However, I have never been so pale in my life. I'm sure I blended in with the sand. Good thing I was laying on a towel or else the lifeguard on the 4-wheeler most definitely would have run me over!

Today we figured out how to get wireless internet on my computer and I got a cell phone. I also mastered public transportation (the bus) by getting to the mall.

Come to find out, all the girls here, upon asking me where I'm from, I tell them 45 minutes south of NYC on the beach. Then they ask if I'm from the Jersey Shore. HAAHAH! I love it! I told them none of my friends look or act like them, but there is some truth to the Guido and Guidette thing. Then I show them a picture I have on my phone of me in front of the house taken last July. Everyone here loves Snooki. Apparently when you go out in Sydney, there is alot of the same kind of crowd there, as well. Who knew?!

Talk soon all!

Cheers!
